Originally from the Washington D.C. area, Alex Spinney has attended the Edinburgh College of Art (Edinburgh, Scotland), Savannah College of Art and Design (Bachelors of Fine Arts: Painting), SCAD: Lacoste (Provence, France), School of Visual Arts, State University of New York at New Paltz (Masters of Fine Arts: Painting), and The Vermont Studio Center. She currently has a studio practice in Brooklyn, NY, and works as a Painter for Jeff Koons.

Alex Spinney's work thematically reflects upon the idealization and historicization inherent of the genre of portraiture. She uses thin oil glazes to build up the surface, finding the balance between highly representational depiction of form, and flattened dissolution of patterns and color relationships. She is fascinated by the representation and calculation of beauty and grandeur, and frequently adorns her portraits with precious metals, and a highly varnished and saturated surface quality.
